This project consists of the transformation of a car garage into a new family home. Only the façade onto the street of this old garage was conserved.
To be able to accurately adapt to the boundaries of the plot and to clear a maximum space free of any structural elements, we made the choice to build using a steelwork frame. The house is setback sitting between the conserved façade and the end boundary wall, which clears enough space allowing for the necessary parking spaces for 2 cars towards the street side and creates a courtyard towards the rear.
On entering, bathrooms and bedrooms are found on the ground floor which open out onto the courtyard and are protected by the tall stonewalls from the neighbouring buildings. The large living spaces measuring 100m2 are on the first floor level contained under a gently sloping roof whose bare underside exposes the galvanized metal sheeting. The house is largely glazed, only protected by net curtains made from horticultural shadecloth towards the south, which hang over the terrace in the courtyard. The main view is framed to the front by a horizontal window running the full length of the building. The house follows a rational plan, which allows a response to the brief and programme of 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large living space and several spaces for storage. The same materials were used both inside and outside; black corrugated aluminium sheeting, black concrete, solid sheeting, perforated sheeting and galvanized steelwork. The steelwork within the house is left exposed and visible. The assembly and composition of this structure is clearly visible.
From the street, the new house is invisible, hidden by the façade of the old garage. Once the gate opens, the buildings dark shell is compressed between buildings of relatively little importance. The ground floor is a maze of rooms and circulation space, an intimate space, which opens onto the protected courtyard. Upstairs, which is accessed by a large staircase that is illuminated by a rooflight, is a dilation of space right up to the skin of the building, nothing superficial or unnecessary.
