Bickershoek is a project of 8 apartments, designed by HM Architecten, which are built on top of a Montessori primary school that is designed by Architectuurstudio Herman Hertzberger. The architecture of the building has to respond to different periods of city planning. The location is important as well because it is the entrance to the Bickerseiland (by the Westerdok in Amsterdam). The Montessori school has a complex volume, made of brick and glass facades. In contrast, and to make a harmonising whole, the houses are solid and closed volumes. Only to the waterside they open up entirely. The other facades exist completely of wood and have blinds/shutters that can be opened horizontally or vertically, depending on the story. The choice of wood as material for the facade is essential. It fits easily in the setting (that has a history in constructing ships). It is tight but not tough, and the colour (Olympic Stain Redwood) accords very well with the red roofs on the island. By placing the Lariks laths 1 centimetre apart on specific places, a beautiful light enters the houses. And on the outside it leads to a nuance of the closed volumes. Especially near the corners and when the artificial light inside is on, you see light coming through the facade that appears to be closed. In front of the windows there are blinds/shutters to assure privacy and achieve an effective sun screen. The composition of the building, and also its materials and colours, created a project that respects the structure and architecture of the surroundings and gives a contemporary response to the historical setting.
