La Quintana Library is one of the projects conceived as part of a larger municipal plan that comprises the development of several buildings. Its main objective is urban and social transformation of Medellin. the library is located in suburban area on the northwest of the city and it will be connected to the downtown through the future integrated transportation system known as "Metroplus". It plays a role of a connector that articules different cultural, physical and natural characteristics of surroundings, providing in advance a response to a future developments that will complement the urban plan and will consolidate the improvement of the area.
The lineal park which runs parallel with La Quintana stream has the library to be a connector between the point of arrival from the city and the nature surrounded by the park. The building also responds to the different urban grids that affect the site trough internal and external space relations, working as a portal to the park from the city. People circulate through a pedestrian street, which is the main axis of the building, where the community interacts. The library becomes a place of social and cultural interchange. These civic activities are complemented with a library in the lower level. The library works as the nucleus of the project. visitors can discover the nature and the spirit of the park here.
The pedestrian streets receives the flow of people from the city through an open plaza of urban scale. It distributes the building in two areas with different characteristics. The library in a lower level, which has a passive character and potential to take full advantage of the future improvements of the park. The civic center in the pedestrian street level includes an active space like classrooms, conference rooms and a center for entrepreneurial developments for the community. Both buildings are integrated by means of a wooden pergola that provides the shadow.
The project considerably obtains the best comfortable conditions and the quality of environment by means of own dispositions to sustainable architecture, looking for the energy efficiency of the project, eliminating power operated air conditioned equipment and reducing the use of public lighting system.
The characteristics of the site provide the building with moderate typical winds in the hill side. The project takes advantage of this condition, using cross ventilation as a passive cooling system. Such cross ventilation has its maximum effect at night when lower temperatures accumulate in the mass of the building. It works during the day as cooling device.
The air intakes for the reading rooms will be located next to the water features which will work combined with the flowing air. The pergola works as thermal insulator that protects the more exterior areas from solar radiation, creating a micro-climate for the project.
The project established the pedestrian street to connect with the library, as dynamic space for the citizen encounter of urban character, working as the central axis of the building. The pedestrian receives and leads the people, like a river in movement through a continuous structure of spaces visually connected and defining and urban experience where life becomes the essence; a free and open architecture, a democratic space.
