Creating a 21st-century library represents an exceptional opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved so far and define the direction we want to take toward the reading habit. Beyond providing books, the real challenge lies in designing an environment that inspires learning, fosters research, and encourages interaction, leaving behind the traditional perception of libraries as rigid or sluggish spaces.
To this end, we undertook a renovation project that would transform the space into a functional and flexible environment. The remodeling not only reconfigured the various areas but also provided the space with a welcoming, stimulating, and educational atmosphere, optimizing every element to enhance the user experience.
The new program integrates several key areas: a library area, spaces for digital and analog research, multipurpose areas, and collaborative workstations. Throughout the process, we achieved a balance between the formality required for study and research, and the sense of accessibility and dynamism we consider essential to encourage reading and social interaction.
The furniture played a fundamental role in the project, as much of it was custom-designed and produced to ensure versatility and comfort. Ergonomic work tables were incorporated, along with reference units equipped with beanbags that allow for immediate reading of materials, and a corner with steps and a projector, ideal for presentations and group reading sessions. In addition, an open space was created, complemented by strategically placed seating to facilitate both individual study and interaction.
The design of this space has been meticulously thought out to balance functionality and aesthetics through a careful selection of materials and finishes. In the reading area, the walls are primarily covered with paint, providing a sense of spaciousness and light. However, to add texture and sophistication, subtle touches of wallpaper have been incorporated, creating visual contrasts that enrich the environment without detracting from its harmony.
For the floors, they opted for a wood-like vinyl floor covering, which combines the warmth and elegance of the natural material with the durability and practicality of vinyl. This detail not only enhances the aesthetics of the space but also facilitates its maintenance and durability in everyday use.
The painted drywall panels reinforce the uniformity of the design, creating a clean surface that contributes to the sense of balance and cohesion within the whole. The visual continuity of the finishes creates a fluid and well-integrated environment, in which each element fulfills a specific function without losing sight of the interior design.
The furniture and doors have been designed in wood with a light-toned Formica finish, a choice that enhances the sense of order and warmth in the space. The combination of materials guarantees durability and aesthetics, ensuring that each piece blends harmoniously into its surroundings. Finally, in the seating and projection areas, upholstery mats have been incorporated to provide comfort without compromising the design, adapting to the dynamics of the space and providing a more welcoming experience for those who inhabit it.
Every design decision, from the selection of materials to the arrangement of elements, was aimed at transforming the library into an innovative and stimulating environment where reading, learning, and socializing naturally converge.
