Bethany Net Zero Energy Pending School

The Sisters of the Transfiguration property encompasses an approximately 20-acre site in the heart of Glendale. There are twenty-two buildings on their campus, whose design and detailing is indicative of the decade in which they were built. It has resulted in an eclectic mix of styles and character sprinkled through-out the site.
Many of the reasons that this campus is beloved by so many are many of the same reasons that make this campus a challenge to build on. Topography is varied across the site. The majority of flat parcels have been developed upon. Buildings must be sympathetic to the grade change, embrace it and use it to make appropriate man-made additions to the landscape.
The final design of Bethany's Master Plan capitalizes on the existing assets while positioning the school and campus for the next several decades. As families arrive on campus, they will first notice the renovated St. Faith. This historic structure will serve as the administrative center.
A new gateway will greet students and announce the arrival onto campus. This gateway will serve as the beginning of a pedestrian sequence that will travel past an outdoor classroom, through a courtyard, along the academic buildings and terminate at a collection of 4 existing cottages. The academic buildings will have second story balconies or plazas that will open up onto the student scaled walkway. The buildings will work with the sloping land and present a layered composition from the Gateway. At the top of the hill is a new cafeteria addition, which will give a new presentation to the existing multipurpose complex. This glass enclosed space will survey the play spaces and surrounding hillside.
The final composition showcases an advancement of Bethany Schools. It positions this unique place to compete well into the 21st century as a school focused on the best for their students, low student to teacher ratios, the Christian environment, family atmosphere, appreciation of diversity and attention to strong character values.
emersion DESIGN, along with Fanning Howey Associates, executed schematic design on the entire Master Plan to ensure a holistic approach. Phase 1, a new grade 3-8 building and a new cafeteria, of construction is complete.
