Originally built in 1967, Congregation Beth Israel's 11,000 SF facility was in dire need of both cosmetic updates and a fresh
vision for a new era. With a limited budget, our efforts focused on the core common areas, including the sanctuary, social
hall / kitchen, restrooms, and the main foyer and circulation hall that tie them together. The restrooms were completely
reconfigured and refinished, and handicap and assisted facilities added.
In the sanctuary, the original front-facing pew and bimah plan was replaced with a central bimah arrangement, to create a
more inviting and inclusive atmosphere and inspire a more participatory service. New windows were added to increase
and spread daylight evenly throughout the space. A dramatic, new, custom wood ceiling unifies the space and significantly
improves the acoustics. With money left over in the budget, the ark was both lowered and given a complete facelift.
All spaces received new floor and ceiling finishes, as well as upgraded insulation to increase the efficiency of the building
envelope. We brought the building's infrastructure into the 21st century with all new LED lighting and motion controls,
mechanical systems, and security systems. New sound systems and hearing loops were also added to both the sanctuary
and social hall.
Because the project came in on budget and has succeeded in energizing the membership, the building committee is
currently fast tracking a Phase 2, focusing on the proposed new entry plaza.
