The new headquarters for Beside Communication, a brand new operator in networking for fashion based in Milan, was designed by architect Fabio Ferrillo in a location that used to house an old garage from the 1930s until after the Second World War. The space, now completely refurbished, reveals many of its original characteristics: wide volumes, hammered cement flooring, large windows on the private garden. Numerous interventions over the years had deeply compromised the space’s original identity and charm: many internal divisions and several suspended ceilings were hiding a floor plan that was revealed and restored in its original unity. The architect chose to modernise and give a new interpretation of the building by adding new elements, like the technical systems, deliberately evident, the ventilation conducts, with their contemporary appeal, and some completely transparent volumes, letting the light cross the whole perspective of the space, while warm grey hues preserve smoothness and continuity. Doors and windows have been carefully salvaged. A technical room, once separated, has been connected to the central main room and converted in a surprising private office by adding a scenographic crystal parallelepipedon and enhanced by the central six-armed Serge Mouille chandelier. An impressive furniture element, in opaque black lacquered wood, hides technical spaces and service rooms, mirroring in the recovered and restored original floor. Custom made mobile elements and a suspended track system are used as displays for the different collections. The ceiling projectors come from abandoned industrial sites in the north of France and are paired with pieces of characteristic Italian design, lighting up this contemporary and versatile space that can easily hold and value the different collections it was designed for.
