Filled with character, purpose, and a sense of community, this vibrant public square makes a valuable contribution to daily life in North Sydney.
Berry Square, created as part of the 1 Denison Street development, is a warm, green, and welcoming public space designed to cater to a growing residential community. The square’s radial design is a refreshing contribution to the North Sydney open space network, and the careful planning of its alignment means that it is the only public space in the CBD that enjoys sunlight throughout the day.
The planting scheme was carefully designed to offer points of interest through the seasons, with a tightly curated colour palette that accentuates the qualities of the new built environment.
A warm material palette enlivens the space, and the use of porphyry cobblestone in the radial arrangement underfoot constitutes a sophisticated and energising interpretation of a historically relevant material.
Throughout the space, inviting fixed furniture pieces create pockets of seating in wells of sunlight. Elsewhere, a shade structure provides cover and defines an outdoor “room”, populated with flexible seating elements by Breakspear Architects.
