This house is located on the sunny elevated southern side of the street with good views east towards the ocean and north towards the Newcastle City Skyline. The brief called for a substantial house on a relatively small site of just 349sqm and 10m wide.
The dwelling optimises a narrow block with an elongated T-shaped plan that opens to the street and views to the northeast while enclosing the rear yard to the southeast and screening out a three storey flat building to the west.
The main floor of the house, one level above the street contains interconnected living, kitchen and dining rooms opening to large external living areas and rear garden plus a laundry / bathroom and ensuite for a master bedroom. A small roof terrace over the central timber clad section of the house has barbecue facilities and allows panoramic views to the Pacific ocean and City skyline over adjacent roof tops with a high level of privacy while the basement contains a four car garage, a gym, games room and storage.
The materials and finishes have been selected to compliment the exposed coastal setting with large operable glazed doors facing the main outdoor open spaces and views, and elements of weatherboard cladding over a rendered masonry plinth which breaks up the form and scale of this house on the tight site. The long western elevation facing flats adjacent is broken in three sections by the two storey timber clad element. These materials are completed with a Colorbond ultra roof, maximising durability in the coastal environment.
