Streetscape Design
Kelowna, BC
Client: City of Kelowna
Status: Conceptual design phaseSite: Bernard
Avenue is the main street of Downtown Kelowna. The city is undergoing an
upgrade of the municipal infrastructure under the roadway and is taking
advantage of the disturbance to redesign Bernard Avenue.Problem Statement: To
create a public space that has a strong community identity that
welcomes first-time visitors and is relevant to every-day residents,
while providing diverse activities for the community. The street design
is a major component of the revitalization of downtown.
Design Solution:
Space2place
undertook an extensive analysis to identify the opportunities and
constraints of the street and the needs of the community. We have held
3 public workshops with local stakeholders to identify the priorities
for redevelopment. To help the client and the community decide what
elements eventually need to be included in the design, we then
developed two conceptual options which focus on the amount of
pedestrian space vs the amount of space for vehicles. Once this was
decided the preferred plan was developed to incorporate the principles
developed earlier in the process.
