As hampson williams are located within the heart of the Bermondsey Street
Conservation area and as such we have been called upon to consider projects in
the immediate vicinity. Re-working a tired former antique store, with offices above on a
prominent location within the street was
the subject of this project.
It was our intention from the start to propose a dramatic
contemporary intervention within the streetscape, and the requirement for
additional accommodation facilitated this. The complex boundary relationships, with such close proximity to
existing surrounding residences created specific volumetric challenges
principally dictated by sunlight and daylight considerations. The resulting form of the building and its internal organization
is a direct response to these complex external factors allied to the demands of
maintaining and converting much of the original structure.
Essentially the existing structure acted as a “mule” with
additions grafted on, not in any random way but best placed to unlock the full
potential of the building., responding wherever possible to the possibilities
of the context with the second floor glazed living area projecting over the
adjacent Lamb Walk being a case in point. These disparate elements have been brought together through a
single unifying architectural theme with the resulting proposal seen as a
whole, providing contemporary commercial and residential space.
