Bentham Works was built during World War II to store military aircraft in the countryside out of reach of enemy bombing. Since that time it has had several other uses and now sits redundant as an industrial relic within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our proposal is for a new village centre of approximately 50 houses with a community barn designed in the Cotswold tradition to evoke the charm and character of the area. As supporting information for the planning application and to inform the design process, we have carried out a detailed study of the Typical Cotswold Village, concentrating particularly on the villages of Castle Combe, Guiting Power, Snowshill and Lower Slaughter. The site is located right on the edge of the Cotswolds, where it abuts the Severn Vale, and so the village has been designed to reflect both the Cotswolds in its core around the Green and the Vale in its lower density and more rectilinear periphery. The development is blended with the countryside by means of large gardens, native hedgerows, an orchard and allotments.
