KAGAN Architecture spent several years evaluating ten potential sites for the school, before the City of New Haven eventually negotiated and purchased the 15-acre site which KAGAN had recommended, due to its size, accessibility, surrounding neighborhood and proximity to the existing school.
The site planning concept emphasizes the direct link of the building to the outdoors, unencumbered visually and physically by driveways, parking, school bus circulation and the parent drop off area. Half of the site is being left in its original state, holding site costs down and creating additional future outdoor recreation land with a link to other parkland in the neighborhood.
The 91,000 square foot school opened in September 2007, and includes two stories of classrooms for the second through eighth grades above a first level containing principally, the Central Administration, Library/Media Center, Cafetorium, Gymnasium and a separate wing for the Pre-K and K-1 Classrooms. This layout will permit the public to utilize the large assembly spaces for after hours events, while the academic portions of the building are secured. The flexible design has anticipated a maximum future capacity of over 600 students, should the less populated magnet program revert back to a neighborhood school.
The design incorporates “Green” design features and adheres to energy savings performance plan criteria formulated by the City of New Haven for all new schools.
