The deliberate design and orientation of the building are driven by the challenging site contours which resulted in a three floor split-level design solution. The split-level design, combined with running the long axis of the building parallel to the contours, help to reduce earthwork, balance the site and reduce site development cost. This east-west building alignment is also the preferred solar orientation to reduce heat gain while maximizing opportunities for daylight harvesting.
The split-level design accommodates an unconventional organization of the Athletics components as the locker rooms are located below the gymnasiums and allow athletes immediate access to the Soccer Field, Track, and Outdoor Basketball Courts. An exterior arbor, located to the north of the Cafetorium, serves as an overflow space both for Fine Arts events and Student Dining.
