The new Belle Creek Family Center is the heart of a new-urbanist, multi-family affordable housing development in Commerce City. Created to be a “family-oriented new town”, Belle Creek is a 170-acre, 1000-unit, mixed-income community featuring a town center, retail space, parks, and recreation areas.
Designed by Humphries Poli Architects, P.C. to be a focal point of the community, the 22,800 sq. ft. Family Center houses an Early Childhood Learning Center, community meeting and event rooms, a technology center, a gymnasium, an exercise room and multipurpose areas. A K-8 charter school has begun construction on the site immediately adjacent to the Family Center, and will share many of the recreational spaces.
The Family Center by its very nature is the “civic” building of the community. It has been sited on the southern edge of the “town square” defined on the north by three story townhomes, on the east by three-story multi-family apartments, and on the west by two-story single family housing. As the community’s primary public building, it employs enduring masonry materials and elements of civic scale to reinforce its role and location. Consistent with the community’s concept of affordability, the building was constructed of easily obtained and economical materials. The architectural theme of the residential structures is a historical palette consistent with most new urbanist communities. The architectural theme of the Family Center is a modernist design approach employed to juxtapose the building both thematically and physically by honoring the past, respecting the present, and yet looking to the future.
