This was our third project with the same clients, where the original waterfall courtyard patio was designed in 2008. Following a 2-year restoration of the 5-storey Belgravia townhouse, where an elevation deepening, rooftop & a swimming pool basement were added, we created a large living wall in 2019 in a reduced patio courtyard of only 15 sqm area.
5m wide x 5m high, the wall is detailed in a grey tile motif backdropped by LED lighting. 20 plant types cascade down the wall, specified for shade in this north-facing prospect engulfed by very high walls. Tiarella, Soleirolia, Pachysandra, Luzula, Liriope, Lamium, Hosta, Carex, Campanula, Asarum, Ajuga, Acorus & 10 Fern varieties intermingle to produce an all-year-round verdant drapery of contrasting textures and rich biodiversity.
Black Italian limestone tiles and Cedar privacy screens form the hard landscaping, while the green wall provides an immersive focal point viewed from every vista within the home, endowing well-being in every peek, becoming a flaming centrepiece at nightfall. A bespoke storage bench hides the swimming pool ventilation pipes, cladded with striated tiles to allow heat run off. A large bespoke outdoor fireplace is clad in large light-grey tiles, with concealed apparatus and a warm, inviting glow.
The roof terrace is very close to the vertical wall, featuring recessed troughs, Bamboo, Sedges, privacy hedging, Pseudopanax and a Japanese Maple tree. The Maple replaces the 3 trees we once had in the original courtyard design and is repeated in the front garden. A stacked natural stone arrangement top mulches the tree base, adding precise architectural detail.
The ground view is via glass sliding doors in a sweeping indoor-outdoor progression. The adjoining interior is the children’s music room with a grand piano, music instruments and a cinema screen. There’s also a first-floor balcony with ferns in pots and indoor houseplant arrays.
Following the project, we were given the task of a planting trip to the clients’ Tuscany home to replace, layer, adjust and enhance the existing plant scope. With a Mediterranean palette and favourable weather, the horticulture here is in complete contrast to the shaded green wall courtyard, where we grow Fig, Olive, Pine, Pomegranate & Cypress trees.
