The Bel Air Highschool Athletic Complex is a pioneer project within the Ysleta Independent School District’s search for excellence in student experience. This complex seeks to celebrate Bel Air’s rich history of athletes such as well-renowned basketball player “Jim” Forbes who was part of the U.S.A. National Team for the 1972 Olympics.
“Prior to project initiation, the Ysleta Independent School District had planned for a one-story building that would house all activities. The Bel Air High School Athletic Complex, through design, was consolidated into a three-story facility minimizing the building’s footprint on campus.”
With the interest of maximizing the use of this facility for all students, the project encompasses indoor sports facilities required for all of the high school sport offerings; a weight room / training area to supplement field sports such as football, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, track + field; and a student collaboration space where students are able to lounge during sport events or between classes.
“The Bel Air High School Athletic Complex can host four official basketball/volleyball events, weightlifting sessions, a regional gymnastics tournament, a wrestling tournament, and a dance competition, all at once.”
The facility consists of three levels. The basement level is comprised of the main court and bleachers along with supporting spaces. This allows for a completely open space plan at the first level concourse. Contrary to the typical “tunnel-effect” behind bleachers found in most sporting event venues, the open-plan promotes student interaction, visual connections, and the integration of natural light. At the second floor, the auxiliary court, gymnastics, wrestling, and dance programs over-look the city. Through the building, The Franklin Mountains can be seen in the horizon.
The exterior promenade at the street is a point of convergence that connects the north-end of the campus with the south-end; and becomes a highly frequented drop-off and pick-up area for all students. The series of columns at front act as the “front-door” to the complex. Large glass panels at the front façade allow students to witness “The Game Friday Nights” from the building’s exterior; a connection to the community.
The Bel Air Highschool Athletic Complex marks the beginning of an era for “The District.”
