Founded in 1087, Xi'an Beilin Museum is the earliest and largest number of art treasures in China. The stone monuments of Beilin Museum recorded valuable historical documents, which was the earliest national library in China. With the development of the city, the museum also revealed the need for renewal and expansion.
The project is located in Xi'an SanXue Street, a national historic district. However, the entire neighborhood lacks open public spaces and parks due to over-density of buildings. The goal of the design is to transform the Beilin Museum from the closed "China's largest stone library" into a "museum in the park " for citizens to walk through, walk around, learn, and communicate. "Museum Park" will not only the needs of the museum, but also it will provide a public open space for the citizens of the neighborhood.
The inspiration of the architectural shape comes from the " imperial crown " that symbolizes Chinese culture. The designer extracts beautiful and smooth curves from the " imperial crown ", which is light and elegant, and forms an " imperial crown" by stones. This shape symbolizes the world's only museum with a monolith as its main exhibit
The spatial layout takes into account both form and function. The scale of the new building is low-profile and modest, while continuing the spatial shape of Beilin Confucian Temple while meeting the needs of large-scale stone carvings. The museum supporting area on the east side continues the scale of Stone Art Museum Scale. New and old buildings are harmony and unity.
In order to create a "museum in the park", the design breaks the traditional closed courtyard layout. The plaza garden and sunken courtyard attract tourists to the main underground exhibition space. Multiple light atriums and sunken courtyards introduce natural light to the first basement level satisfies the demand for natural light from the display of the stele.
