The young Mexican-German architecture and interior design studio MANADA has been awarded with the Interior Innovation Award 2012 by the German Design Council at imm Cologne. MANADA received this prestigious award for their design of the Bed 42, along with fellow winners Patricia Urquiola, Konstatin Grcic, and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, among others.
Bed 42 was on display at the imm Cologne Fair on 2012 and booked for other exhibitions around Europe.
Bed 42 is the materialization of multiple explorations by MANADA. By mixing a bed and desk in a single product, they explore the flexibility of use of everyday objects while holding the creation of quality products that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable and timeless in their design as a priority.
“We do believe that what makes a design timeless is its constructive consciousness”, says MANADA partner Alejandro Tapia. “The design approach has a lot to do with it becoming timeless”, adds Katerina Alatzia, architect and MANADA partner. “Certified solid wood gives us that: it is a noble material that ages properly and is environmentally sustainable. That is part of a timeless design”, finishes Alejandro.
The design of the Bed 42 reflects the creative DNA of the partners’ nationalities: on the one hand, the precision that characterizes German design; on the other, the handcrafting skills of Mexican artisans. The bed is manufactured in four weeks without any machinery, using 2-inch certified solid walnut and local handcraft labor. The duo is one of the players in the up-coming young Mexican design scene, and the Interior Innovation Award 2012 is definitely a confirmation that they are on the right path in their search for sustainable and timeless design.
imm Cologne is the most important fair in the furniture market. At the beginning of every year it presents the new international furniture trends and surprises with numerous marketable innovations. “This is a unique piece of furniture made of certified solid walnut, which has a double function by turning the headboard into a desk. The private space becomes a work space by automatically installing your studio in your bedroom, or vice versa. At the same time if you don’t want to completely cover the beautiful wood with a mattress, you can use the piece in a public area as a sofa / lounge.”
