BB Building, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2010
Rock Band Babasonicos Studio
This building is located in San Cristóbal, a commercial and industrial neighborhood, nearby historic areas of San Telmo and La Boca. The client wanted a building with a sober look, which not calls too much attention or denounce is inside. It was pretended to integrate him in its surroundings, where the use of the corrugated galvanized sheet, being an economic and durable material, is common. The construction had to be quick and the budget limited. "Fast, cheap and good".
The building is divided in 3 volumes. The front volume, facing the street (Building 1) homes a music content producer office; in the back volume (Building 2), sheltered, a rock band has its recreational and composition spaces. In between, as a safe-deposit box, is the main rehearsal studio, a massive volume of concrete.
These volumes are independent of each other and communicated by courtyards.
The construction of the building was a mix of wet and dry systems. All structural elements (columns, beams, walls and floors load) are made of concrete; all other divisions are built in Steel Framing. The idea was to use cheap materials, easily accessible, but confer them a new expression and quality in is performance.
By the use of the building, the soundproofing was fundamental. We use a dry construction system with a reinforced insulation (thermal and acoustic) to make this a comfortable building that consumes as little energy as possible.
The building is lived for 3 different groups of people that do not want to mixt: the musicians, who are in is creative process; everyone working in the company (which are in the bustle of an office) and a group of strange people to the band, that every day enter the building for several reasons.
3 distinct levels of intimacy were defined with the building, 3 circulation hierarchies.
The skin of the building reflects these intentions. For the facades was established a game between transparencies (double glazing), translucent surfaces (sandwich plate of corrugated translucent outside and milky polycarbonate inside) and totally opaque surfaces (sandwich of corrugated galvanized sheet for the exterior and interior finish in plasterboard). They combined depending on the project needs, of privacy or exhibition of the spaces and lighting. The building becomes more permeable or impermeable, sheltering or exposing.
A balance between opposites: natural (plant) versus artificial (construction); cold (Gray, metal, concrete) versus warm (light wood). In this manner the constructed coexists with nature, the harshness of industrial materials such as metal and concrete is softened by the green of the patios.
Inside, we looked that the cold concrete, was softened by the warmth of direct or filtered light, that the white veneer, gray floor and ceiling were balanced with the warmth of wood.
Time as passed by, 5 years since I finished this work. As a good wine, I feel that the building improved a lot with years. All my intentions can now been seen. The plants have grown and melt with the building. The building is lived and alive! So I feel that now is the right time to show it.
