Conceptual design phase
Site: The
Bayly Park site is a former landfill adjacent to the Olympic Village
currently under construction almost 8 kilometres west of Whistler
Village. This landfill has been capped and the space will be used for
overflow parking and other services during the Olympics before it is
transformed into a recreational park for future residents of the
Village.
Problem Statement: To
create a public space that has a strong community identity that
welcomes first-time visitors and is relevant to every-day residents,
while providing diverse recreational opportunities for the community.
Design Solution:
space2place
undertook an extensive analysis to identify the opportunities and
constraints of the site and the recreational needs of the Whistler
community. To help the client and the community decide what elements
eventually need to be included in Bayly Park, we then developed two
conceptual options with varying recreational opportunities. These
concept options were broken down into phases to ensure that the park
built after the Olympics meets the immediate needs of the community
while the spaces within the park are flexible to accommodate future
recreational elements.
