The BAYER LEAPS STAIRS, a globally touring temporary installation, designed, fabricated and built in 10 weeks, launched "Bayer Leaps" at the Summit Los Angeles 2017 event. The client, BAYER AG, has committed to generate breakthrough solutions in life and crop sciences, aiming to conquer ten challenges facing humanity. These challenges, are "leaps of faith" which require increased risk and collaboration. Results may only be realized by future generations.
The criteria was to design a 1:1 scale, minimalist, portable, programmable replica of the infamous, "Lyon 25 Steps" originally attempted by Pro Skateboarder Ali Boulala, but successfully completed by Aaron Jaws Homoki a generation later. The Leaps Stairs is a symbol, bringing the brand mission of Bayer Leaps to life. It's a story of never giving up, inspiring future generations. The installation intention is to generate dialogue, partnerships & awareness.
Sited at each event, users interact, climb, and experience the Leap from the observation platform. The design uses the concrete steps as the generative seed for all design elements. Details flow horizontally and vertically from the proportions, dimensions, joints, precise alignments and finishes of the stair. Fluid continuity, over scale and perspective, create a minimalist, cohesive unity. The installation is designed and engineered to be installed above grade, with no connections to grade.
The exterior of the massive, lightweight doors is a concrete finish, applied to match the concrete-like step treads. Underneath the stairs, hidden behind doors, is the Leaps Studio, a sanctuary space for gathering, relaxation, yoga and talks. The soft, interior sanctuary finishes contrast with hard exterior concrete finishes. The curved, lit, fabric interior wall conceals structural, electrical and technological infrastructure. Lighting, signage, and custom-built LED modules integrated within the steps, become the canvas for user controlled generative content, films and scenic finishes. They tell the Bayer Leaps mission.
