Bay East is a 33 ha linear garden that embroiders a stretch of the Marina Channel promenade, providing landscaped access to a strategic portion of Singapore’s waterfront.
The Bay East Garden is part of long-term land reclamation scheme in Singapore. Land is reclaimed from the sea to gain land for the predicted expansion of the population.
The team set out to understand the water quality issues, strategic flood prevention and city-wide water control measures in order to find complementary strategies within the garden.
We work with patterns of sunlight and shade, dominant direction of breezes, natural drainage channels, and the diversity of seasons to deliver design that is sustainable, comfortable, and technically intelligent.
Within Bay East, five water inlets are orientated along the dominant direction of breezes from Marina Bay, channelling them into the park. Major attractions like restaurants, cafes, visitor centre, lifestyle centre and museum are clustered in ‘Garden Leaves’. These are interpreted as a series of large garden landforms that fold over and envelope the buildings. The insulation offered by the earthy landforms improves the environmental performance of these building and allows the tropical rainfall to infiltrate as part of the Sustainable Urban Drainage initiative. Aquatic Water gardens with reed bed filtration systems support the cleansing of the bay water as part of a PUB initiative.
Comfort and well-being has been at the forefront of our thinking throughout. The human body and how we feel in our environment, what we eat, drink and engage with are celebrated in the individual leaves. Food grown in the gardens can be consumed in the Restaurants. Educational displays will offer food for thought and teach children about the natural world.
