Battiste Hall is a 200 room co-ed residence hall located on the campus of S. C. State University. The new building completes the urban street wall between two existing dormitories along the internal east-west axis of the campus and reinforces the central quadrangle north of the Whittaker Library clocktower. An “urban fissure” at the center of the building contains the central stairway and serves as a portal between the campus this historically black land grant university and the urban corridor leading to downtown Orangeburg. A steel framed canopy porte-chochére delineates the connection between “town and gown” and marks the intersecting north-south axis.
