This was an intervention with a new window and door to a B Listed building in the Portobello Conservation Area. Complete July 2010.
The 'window', two frameless double glazed panels that were sized to allow access through the house, are set flush to the surface of the stonework. This makes use of the thickness of the walls internally and draws attention to the beautiful stugged sandstone walls.
The client is a family with two young boys. The new opening includes level access to a deck outside; the raised level utilised to create
built-understorage.
The kitchen was also redesigned with a new breakfast bar | island and built-in furniture to make a casual dining area.
The Bath Street window is currently shortlisted for a Saltire Housing Award and an Edinburgh Architecture Association (EAA) small projects
award for 2011. It has been widely published including on the cover of Beautiful Kitchens magazine. All pictures by Alan Craigie except where noted
