Function: Kindergarden and Elementary School
Building Area: 1.836m2

The School Center of Barrô is located on a small country town and joins the functions of kindergarden and elementary school.
The surrounding area shows few construtions, turning it into a somewhat isolated and central building. So, the project itself had to “draw” it´s own surrounding spaces and identity. The playgrounds, the sportfield and the gardens are designed by the building, creating strait ties with it.
A few central ideas were essential in the architectural conception of the School Center project.
The dimension of the site and the will to define the surrounding spaces using the building itself, demanded a one-floor only construction.
The front façade should be the school public face and the building entrance would be clearly marked.
The classrooms, playgrounds and refectory would be protected from the main street. It should be a students área. The classrooms should have natural light, good conditions and direct access both to the playground and to the interior corridor. This main corridor connects every space of the entire building.
The interior and exterior materials should have light colours. The school would be happy and joyfull, not dark and heavy.
The pure volumes of the building aim to represent the symbolic function of the school - the transmission of knowledge. The outside and inside spaces would be totally connected
It should be good to learn here.
