A project proposal by Molcajete Urbano.
Skyscrapers are lies. They develop towards new heights yet leave almost anyone at floor level. Only few can ride their elevators.
Through symbolic overpricing architects have limited the skyscrapers possibilites to serious three-piece-suit offices or high-profile appartments with minimalist traits and no imagination. The power represented by these buildings’ height has been shared until now only with a restricted elite, while the rest of society dances to their differences out in the horizontal lands.
Barrio Capital
We wanted to break the doors open and let everybody in. Heck, we wanted to break walls, windows, paradigms and everything that could be blocking our way to a society where everyone can transit horizontally and, finally, vertically as well. So we thought out Barrio Capital, a transdisciplinary project that aims at creating an architectonic metaphor of social integration. It responds to three major problems in Mexico City: the lack of parking space; the lack of public spaces; the lack of social integration.
To do so it joins a vertical parking lot (10 levels) directed to the middle and upper socio economic levels in Mexico City (those who have a car), with a spectacular vertical public park with multifunctional facilites, innovative design and access to everyone.
At the same time, it aims at becoming a public opinion centre thanks to the polling booths throughout its different sections and the possibility to display the results in our media-façade, where LED screens and statistic belts will share the life inside the building with all the people who circulate around it (inside a car or on a sidewalk).
As part of the social metaphor, the building will be self-financed. The fee payed by parking-lot users will be used for the maintenance and improvement of the building’s façade, facilities and its multiple logistic and administrative expenses. This points out the possibility of finding solutions to social needs within civil society: Those who are more priviledged profit on a useful service (parking), while helping maintain a high-quality public space which favors better life-conditions for everyone, regardless of their status, race or preferences.
