Barneys New York commissioned fashion retail architecture experts Jeffrey Hutchison & Associates (JHA) to design a 91,500 square foot emporium at the corner of Oak and Rush streets in the heart of Chicago’s fashion district. JHA translated the urbane Barneys New York aesthetic for its new home while remaining respectful of Chicago’s great architectural heritage, evoking such iconic structures as Louis Sullivan’s Carson Pirie Scott store. The classic design is enhanced through the use of Indiana limestone and bronze-framed windows. The corner of Oak and Rush streets is marked by a 5-story curved glass “curtainwall,” which unveils the dramatic, decorative 3-level staircase, drawing customers inside. This Barneys New York outpost features seven floors of the Barneys trademark mix of pulse-quickening merchandise, each level conveying a distinct feel and experience that coordinates with the wares.
