The barn house is situated next to an old farm at a peninsula in Loenen aan de Vecht. The existing farm is interpreted as the 'mother' of the new residential house; a modest, contemporary translation of a barn next to a farm. The building gets his place in the urban context through the introverted character of black-stained wooden facades and a corrugated roof. The Barn House is simple in design and responds to the still visible remains of the Dutch Water line. The residential program follows the sun; the formal functions are situated towards the public road [at the side of the Vecht] and informal residential functions are situated on the southwest side, where the Hhuse opens itself to the open landscape. Under the gabled roof, which is entirely separately detailed from the facades, has a central core containing all private functions as a kitchen, bathrooms, toilets and bedrooms. The residence rooms are grouped around the core on various residential levels. This creates a route through the house that connectes the intimate, hidden, representative and expressive spaces to each other. The character of the barn house is also accentuated by the visible steel beams and the use of raw wood and unfinished concrete. It is what you see.
