“Bar of paradise” brings out-of-the-world social gathering experiences in a celestial way. As a part of a large amenity program for a NYC apartment, the MJ Kook Architecture and Interior Design (MJ-KAID) aims to reframe the standard of luxury, high-end and sustainable amenity designs. The overarching goal of this “amenity” design is to eliminate the inevitable carbon footprint generated by traveling outside of the apartment. Instead, the amenity bar and lounge bolster the sense of community within the shell of the apartment building. Drawing from the birds of paradise as the main inspiration, the designer aims to create the “social” paradise within the bar and lounge space. Visually, the “motifs” of the paradise work as visual cues. Patterns of birds in upholstery, eccentric ceilings reminiscent of clouds, and the water feature that brings the collective memory of waterfalls of paradise; which work together to create a joyous atmosphere.
Programmatically, these rooms serve as amenities of high-rise apartments. These apartments are typically referred to as residential “towers”. As a shared space between the apartment residents, the bar and lounge serve as a “living” room for residents to experience what a dense city lifestyle can offer: to socialize, entertain with friends. The objective is to create an exciting, theatrical spirit of rooms, while evoking the sense of community. Without having to travel, the carbon footprint is conserved, making this interior design more sustainable and good for the future. The very nature of the “bar” and “lounge” activate the “celebratory” spirit of the design intent.
The party room and the media lounge are side-by-side, each could potentially be rented out for separate events. The rooms could be closed off for smaller functions. Two shared programs serve one primary function; to socialize within the apartment community. The bar can be used for a party with access to an outdoor terrace, while the media lounge can be used by smaller groups of people to watch the TV. They work together as a whole, if a larger catering event is to happen. The main entry is located in the plan north of the lounge. As apartment residents enter the space, they are greeted with cozy soft furniture and balloon-like custom light fixtures. As residents look around, they can “discover” birds and nature motifs in many of FF&E finishes.
If there is a more formal event, a proper party will be set up in the bar room. After passing through the portals made of stained yellow glass with a cloud-like overhead sculpture, the residents enter the “paradise” of the amenities. The bar is filled with light and color, and the residents would feel as though they are standing in the middle of a theater stage. Under the cloud overhanging sculpture, the residents gather around the iron bird and party. The built-in banquette offers comfortable seating. The smaller, under-the-cloud niche is meant for a single person or a small group to socialize. The bar is located in the south-east corner of the space, working as a central service station for parties.
MJ-KAID focused on solution-centric design while thinking about the future of apartment living. As the culture of construction shifts to more sustainable, resilient architecture, interior design projects must also tackle this global, imperative issue. Sustainable lifestyle is a prominent issue on a global scale. To this day and age, bringing the holistic approach to saving carbon footprints has not been studied extensively. Though the sustainable building rating systems have helped immensely to create a dialog for a better sustainable future, the designer proposes an alternative holistic way to create the design approach could be just as effective. Through this interior design project, MJ-KAID sheds the new light and direction to create a creative approach to a sustainable interior design. The challenge is to generate on-going conversations about the direction of sustainability studies; not quantify the exact carbon footprints saved.
Lastly, in order to create an out-of-the-box sustainable design narrative, the oriental, primary, out-of-the-world colors and forms were experimented to its absolute limits. It draws the attention, and jumpstarts a design conversation for sustainable interior design. MJ-KAID hopes to create the “out-of-the-world”, innovative, sustainable lifestyle through the "Bar of Paradise".
