BAPS Hindu Mandir
The Middle East’s First Hindu Temple Oasis
Set against the vast desert landscape of Abu Dhabi, the BAPS Hindu Mandir stands as a powerful symbol of architectural innovation, cultural harmony, and spiritual unity. As the first official Hindu temple in the Middle East, it represents a landmark moment for the region and for the global Hindu community.
While over 3,000 skilled masons in India hand-carved the temple’s intricate stone structure, RSP was commissioned to design the surrounding masterplan and architectural complex. Our role was to honour this extraordinary craftsmanship by creating a setting that frames, enhances, and elevates the temple’s presence.
The wider complex provides spaces for gathering, reflection, and learning, including shaded courtyards, communal plazas, an open-air amphitheatre, and monks’ residences — creating a spiritual sanctuary rooted in community.

A Journey of Discovery
From the very beginning, this project was shaped by deep cultural immersion. Shortly after appointment, the design team embarked on a global journey to understand the spiritual, architectural, and cultural foundations of the Hindu faith.
The journey began in Delhi, where the team studied major temple complexes and learned about the history and traditions of the Swamis. From there, they travelled to Gujarat, spending several days with monks and gaining first-hand insight into sacred rituals and daily life. It was here that the team found inspiration in ancient stepwells — symbols of water, life, and spiritual depth.
The journey concluded in London, where the team explored how traditional temple architecture could be reinterpreted within a contemporary, international context.
Architectural Oasis: A Spiritual Landscape
The BAPS Hindu Mandir complex brings together Indian heritage and Middle Eastern context. While the temple celebrates centuries-old Hindu craftsmanship, the surrounding architecture responds sensitively to the desert climate and regional culture.
Modern pavilions frame the temple, drawing from the form and symbolism of Indian stepwells. In a region where water is both precious and sacred, this reference carries deep meaning.
Three flowing water channels represent India’s sacred rivers, while shaded walkways guide visitors through the site. An open-air amphitheatre provides space for cultural storytelling and community gatherings, inspired by temple courtyards across India.
A private spiritual garden was created for teachings and reflection. Closed to the public, this quiet sanctuary preserves the contemplative heart of the complex.
Throughout, the architecture blends seamlessly with its surroundings — in tone, materiality, and form — reflecting the essence of Hinduism while honouring its Middle Eastern setting.
A Piece of History
As the first Hindu temple of its kind in the Middle East, the BAPS Hindu Mandir stands as a global symbol of unity, tolerance, and cultural exchange. Its high visitor numbers and future development plans reflect the project’s enduring significance and success.
A Spiritual & Collaborative Journey
For the RSP team, this project became far more than architecture — it was a spiritual collaboration. Weekly meetings with the Swamis and BAPS community often began with prayers, grounding the design process in purpose and meaning.
This shared sense of devotion, combined with the team’s diverse cultural backgrounds, created the foundation for a space that transcends borders and beliefs.
