As a campus built in 1978, in order to adapt to the requirements of campus development, the owner needs to update the campus and supplement functions such as commercial facilities and accommodation. The project demolished the original swimming pool and built a new commercial facility and two dormitory buildings.
The west side of the campus is adjacent to the Malu River, with lush green trees on both sides and clear river water. But in the current situation, blocked by walls, the value of the waterfront is not felt on campus. Although the Yuepu community around the Baowu campus has a relatively dense population, it is surrounded by factories and has no commercial facilities in the community. To this end, we suggest that the owner use the southwest corner of the campus to build a waterfront commercial facility, open the campus walls, and increase the accessibility of the surrounding community.
The waterfront facilities follow the topographic contours of the site and form a multi-faceted box. A 2-story atrium is set up in the supporting business to attract people from the first floor to the top-floor business. The windows on the building facade follow the same module and change in position to form the facade texture. In order to provide a perspective for appreciating the waterfront landscape and urban landscape, the building protrudes multiple platforms to the waterfront landscape and urban interface, enriching the building volume and forming an interesting and attractive space. The 2 6F dormitory buildings provide 308 four-person rooms. The facade of the dormitory uses imitation stone paint similar to other buildings on campus. Through the contrast between the virtual and the solid blocks and the concave and convex balconies, a modern and simple architectural shape is formed, which talks with other buildings on the campus.
The renovation of Shanghai Baowu University fully respects the current situation and consider the conditions and constraints of the site itself. By opening the closed campus waterfront area and considering adding supporting facilities to stimulate the vitality of the park, it not only achieves a good dialogue and integration between the new buildings and the historical campus, but also provides a popular waterfront public space for neighboring residents.
