Located at 636-8 Gocheok-ri, Sindun-myeon, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, "Banseonjae" is a facility dedicated to the research, production, and practice of ceramics, situated at the heart of the Icheon Ceramics Village Yespark.
The name "Banseonjae" translates to "a house shared with fresh, vibrant individuals," and it aims to serve as a cultural hub where potters, artists, cultural planners, and culinary researchers can gather and engage in diverse creative activities.
>Spatial Arrangement and Structure
One of the most notable features of Banseonjae is its independent volume that creates diverse places and narratives through its relationship with the external space. The building is arranged in a "ㄱ" shape, divided into southern and eastern courtyards centered around a courtyard.
• Southern Courtyard: This courtyard distinguishes between public and private spaces, providing visitors with scenic views as a garden. It creates a fantastical landscape evocative of ethereal beings walking on water, ensuring privacy by preventing casual access. Additionally, the depth and transparency leading from the road to the rear enhance the advantages of the elongated site, emphasizing the richness of Banseonjae's spatial experience.
• Eastern Courtyard: Serving as the main entrance to Banseonjae, this courtyard functions as a welcoming area. Its cozy and vintage atmosphere, complemented by landscaping and stairs towards the exterior wall, creates a friendly environment for visitors.
• Northern Courtyard: Bordering the parking lot, the northern courtyard provides the owner with an outdoor workspace and acts as a transition to the second-floor terrace. The harmonious view of the southern courtyard and manufacturing spaces from the rear enhances the location's appeal.
• Second-Floor Terrace Space: Designed to display ceramics and tableware outdoors, this approximately 200㎡ terrace offers a unique vantage point to appreciate ceramics in harmony with nature.
>Organization and Connectivity of the Space
The first floor, due to its "ㄱ" shaped courtyard, is divided into two primary areas, with the manufacturing space on the right being independently utilized. However, the bridge on the second floor seamlessly connects these areas, highlighting Banseonjae's unique characteristics. The linear staircase and the bridge serve not just as a passage but as another spatial device that integrates the southern courtyard, main manufacturing area, and rear, achieving spatial harmony. The bridge space also acts as a viewing area, drawing in the surrounding scenery and functioning as a resting space that allows for a deeper experience of time and space within the site.
>Facade Design
The main facade of Banseonjae faces south, utilizing aluminum formed panels to embody the texture of ceramics while showcasing the properties of various light and materials. This facade technique bestows symbolic significance to Banseonjae from the road, clearly delineating public and private realms at the point where the panels terminate. The transition to the private area is marked by white brick finishes that harmonize with the surrounding buildings, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere.
