The two big ideas involved in designing Bamiyan Cultural Centre were being environmentally friendly, and most importantly, spatially cultivate cultural harmony. To achieve sustainability, several measures were implemented in design process. Sun angles were used in designing the roof of the building for daylight. Materials considered were those that can be easily found from nearby, which are bricks, mud, and cement. Courtyard is located before the visitors go to their destination, be it exhibition space, research area, classrooms, or offices. This not only helps ventilation, but also lets more daylight into the building. The courtyard also provides space where people can gather and communicate with each other. Solar panels are used as electricity collector and landscape feature as shade in parking lot, drop off area near the building entrance, and path to the market place. Site located in hot and arid climate where it will receive solar energy for more than six hours per day, it will generate enough electricity for the cultural centre and the people living in the immediate vicinity.
