The Ballston Quarter Pedestrian Bridge, designed by studioTECHNE|architects, was informed by a collaborative public process. The bridge enhances neighborhood connectivity as a vital pedestrian link between Ballston Quarter and the Ballston Exchange as well as connecting those using the walkway to the Metro and the surrounding city. Articulating steel tubes support an undulating zinc roof that encloses the interior space surrounded by glass curtain walls, a polished concrete floor, and a faceted wood-look ceiling.
Custom-designed benches by studio|TECHNE offer a place for respite. The bridge blends function and artistic expression to create an iconic civic presence in the heart of the Ballston neighborhood.
The design features a straight forward geometric approach, where the eccentric structure oscillates between reading the lines of the structure and the transparent volume of the walkway. The designs explore the transcendence of a line to provide a minimal sense of enclosure, the simplicity of a glass volume encased in a structural frame transforms the experience of crossing the street by allowing a direct connection to the surrounding neighborhood activity.
