The Balloon carries electricty across Iceland using solely the land’s natural resources: hydrogen and rock.Iceland – an island of striking scenery – shares its topography with the high-voltage transmission lines that traverse it. How can the transmission towers, which frequently punctuate the landscape, be rendered invisible?Iceland has a rich yet confined set of resources. Can a tower be produced solely with the unique resources Iceland possesses? This proposal responds to these two challenging issues by harnessing the inherent qualities of hydrogen and rock. The Balloon liberates the landscape, minimizes building material, and celebrates Iceland’s iconic resources. Rather than using a heavy, rigid frame to push the conductor lines up, the hydrogen gas of the Balloon pulls the lines up. Four steel cables provide full lateral stability to counteract wind and seismic forces. A secondary frame ensures the immobility of the conductor lines. Existing rocks are caged together to form a solid counterweight foundation to the Balloon.
