The starting point was to
observe the bamboo vines as a vertical garden.
With this idea came the direction of a landscape in motion. The kinetic
art was one of the bases of the project, willing to try to stimulate in the
observer the illusion of movement and constant vibration of the environment
(moiré effect) caused by the number and ordered position of the hanging garden
hoses. Then came the concept of the baleen of the whales; this mysterious mouth
hair with imperceptible deepness where the plankton get trapped. So we wanted
that the baleen box work the same way with the visitors.
The complete project is seen as an
interactive space where different functions can meet (Eating, Drinking,
Socialize, Playing, Experience…), where people can appropriate the space, the
volume at their will. The inside space is shaped like an alcove to let the
central space to be used as the perimeter changes the surroundings constantly.
The materials used are
garden hose for the ropes and dark painted steel for the structure.
The garden hose can be found in several
colors and in a large quantity for very low price. There are a total of 1450 garden hoses
attached on the grid lines, for a combined overall length of almost 23 500
linear ft.
The structure can be partially rented and
only the grid plate to attach the garden hose is needed to be custom made.
The baleen box gives to the visitor a
visual and a space experience with motion and vibration until all becomes a
maze.
