Designer,
Eugene Sellors, creates 24 hour café in working Cornish bakery.
 
 
Following
the success of his two retail outlets in Falmouth and Truro, Tom Hazzledine of
Baker Tom fame asked Eugene Sellors, to design a 24 hour café within the heart
of his industrial bakery at Redruth. 

 
Eugene,
designer of Pentewan Sands Seahorse Club and Powells Garage at Redruth, has
created a café environment featuring a large aperture and window portals into
the working bakery, ensuring that the café will provide a unique experience
with a tangible connection from product to plate.
 
The main
focus of the café is a large 4.8 meter counter found in front of the opening to
the bakery, adorned with a bespoke lighting feature made from re-cycled baking
tins.
 
A
blackboard covers an entire wall of the café with facility for product
placement of Baker Tom’s organic bread, flours, oils and other ingredients and
an allowance for daily specials, 
current recipes, and a recipe swap board. 
 
On an
adjacent wall a large graphic panel includes photographic images celebrating
Tom’s ethics and artisan style of baking.
 
The
emphasis on re-cycled and industrial materials and the light pallet of colours
used play in harmony with the existing industrial context of the building
fabric.
 
Working
closely with Tom to understand his requirements and aspirations, the ethos
behind the design is to highlight the product and to enhance the
experience. 
 
The
café is due to open at Easter 2012.
