BAHAMAS CUSTOM HOME DESIGN CHALLENGE
Designer?s note:
In this so called international design competition six designs were chosen to move on to the second stage, my entry was among the six. There were comments on my entry and I made the necessary changes in my design. I rushed to meet the deadline and submitted my entry. After that, a certain Ralph Wood, who says he is the representative of the client, still wanted me to do some more changes. I told him I will do the changes if the project is awarded to me as it already has taken so much of my time. I had hesitation about doing another revision, in the first stage, the competition web site was offline most of the time, and on the second stage, he asked a lot of personal information that I think was not required in a design competition. So when I said no, that was the last time I heard of him, no explanation whatsoever, even when the competition states that prices will be awarded to those who reached the second stage. I really don?t care so much about the price; it?s the thought of deceiving people for personal gain that pisses me off. I thought of posting this so at least those talented persons, who want to compete, might read this, and will not have to waste their time. If you think a competition feels suspicious, go do some research on the organizer, if it still looks deviously crooked better not take the risk.
And if you happen to be in the Bahamas and passing by West Bay street, and see a house being built on this site, let me know.
DESIGN CRITERIA
The objective of the architectural competition is the design of a 2-3 floor multi-generational home for a husband and wife (in their 50's), six year old twins (boy and girl), and including two self contained guest apartments for sister-in-law, and another sister-in-law and husband (in their seventies). Additionally two 'connected' self contained spaces for live in employees are also required.
The design should be either, Mediterranean, Contemporary, Caribbean or a fusion of all three, while being mindful of a sub-tropic region with tropical summers. (Hot and humid from June through October, with searing sun and torrential rains, and balmy from November - May with occasional cool evenings). The architectural 'guideline' for the home design should be one that stimulates and delights with its unique ideas, exotic details and classic emphasis, and harmonizes indoor and outdoor living spaces.
It is proposed that the design take into consideration the maximum potential use of this large parcel of land giving attention to future growth prospects. As a result, the design concept presented will suggest the need for creativity in design and layout of the building so as not to degrade the value of any unused portion of land which would be set aside for future development.
Site slope gently from road to waterfront. There are no design/zoning restrictions. Property is accessible not only from road but also from the east & west along the waterfront. Has rocky promontory midway along waterfront which affords three sided views. Seasonal alternating beach / rocky foreshore to the west. Beach year round to the east.
