An original solution to the problem, very common in Barcelona, of
constructing an apartment building on a gap site. The plot, close to the
corner with Calvet St., has an extremely narrow opening onto the
courtyard in the interior of the block, and thus very little opportunity
for natural light or ventilation to the rear. It was decided to give
the building an internal courtyard of its own, oriented towards the
point of contact with the communal courtyard. This new courtyard
provides a shared space for all the apartments, letting daylight into
the stair well, the houses themselves and the entrance hall. Given the
asymmetrical disposition of this courtyard, it was necessary to devote
considerable attention to working out the distribution of each apartment
in order to ensure individual privacy in spite of the high proportion
of space devoted to communal use.
