Competition Purpose. Excerpt from the competition brief:
“An open international architectural contest for creation of the project of the memorial complex “Babiy Yar” to commemorate the memory of victims of Holocaust of 1941 in Kyiv, Ukraine. During WW2, events occured that had no analogues in world history and that was known under the name of “Shoa”, “Catastrophe”. Nazis and their allies totally destroyed the Jewish community of Ukraine – more than 1.5 million people during the years of occupation of Ukraine, from July 1941 till October, 1944. The symbol of this tragedy has become Babiy Yar, where tens of thousands Kyiv Jews were killed. The goal of the competition is the creation of a memorial museum complex, which will give maximum possible representation of a historical picture of the Holocaust, its victims and executioners. It must be kept in minds that people who visited this place should not forget the skits and remain indifferent to it. Such perceptions should form the understanding that everything that can repeat the Holocaust, mean the moral and spiritual destruction of mankind.”
