This project consisted of a whole-house renovation as well as capturing area from an existing light well. Typical of San Francisco, this home sits right on its two side property lines, with a Victorian on one side and a commercial building on the other. Construction is always challenging under these conditions, but in this case, it was discovered that the structure had one of the neighbors’ active sewer lines running beneath it. Our project had to lower the line as a part of the scope of our work. Once a dark and isolated basement-apartment, the lower level was converted into separate condominium unit which also functions as an in-law for the upper unit. It is now a light-filled, comfortable entertaining and living space with new finishes throughout. The main unit, upstairs, was equipped with an expanded kitchen and vaulted, cedar-covered ceilings.
