Azamino SOHO is located in the suburbs of Tokyo, a two-story private house with work space/salon used for small events. The ground level of this site is 2.8m higher than the front street level and the L-shaped plan of this house surrounds outside deck under which a structurally independent precast concrete garage is inserted.
“Working” is to keep connection with society. Therefore, if “working at home” gets more common, you may say that many houses can get no longer just closed boxes isolated from their community. It is, of course, without saying that what the architecture can physically do is limited without working with the client’s strong vision and sense of values.
The scheme for Azamino SOHO is not just only responding to the program as a house with work space/salon but also trying to obscure borders between private and public by architectural means.
Chains of open rooms, a well hole in the center, and movable glass partition walls unifying inside with outside deck, lead this house to be an effective device of connecting people, including even the client’s family, participating in various events.
The temporary marketplace held here is one of great achievements and hopes under this unique hous-ing typology.
