Aviator Sports and Events Center is an 8.4-acre multi-use sports and recreation complex located at Floyd Bennett Field, in Brooklyn, NY, home of New York City’s first municipal airport. The project combines four historic airplane hangars into a single 150,000 s.f. indoor sporting facility featuring two-regulation size hockey rinks, a multi-purpose hardwood gymnasium, a gymnastics center and indoor climbing wall. Two outdoor soccer/football/lacrosse synthetic turf fields were designed to NCAA Standards and can accommodate varying levels of play. The design strongly emphasizes and compliments the existing forms of the field, capturing the history of Floyd Bennett Field, while also providing an exciting and accessible state-of-the-art recreation facility. Sustainable design features of the project include the use of natural lighting in the hangars, minimized outdoor light pollution on the tarmac and the installation of a cogeneration plant; which was designed to efficiently supply heat and energy to the facility. The eco-friendly cogeneration plant works at an 89 percent efficiency rating compared to conventional plants which average 40 percent.
