The site for Austin Playhouse is along the frontage road for a fast moving urban thoroughfare. The longtime stalwart of the Austin theater community wanted to express the drama of arriving for an evening performance as the sun is setting and longtime patrons are mingling and readying themselves for a night with their beloved casts. The concrete tilt wall construction shares similarities with the retail and warehouse buildings along the thoroughfair. The difference with Austin Playhouse is that this tilt wall construction parts like a proscenium’s curtain to welcome and display the theater’s lobby and welcome patrons.
