A small suburban 1950's single-family - residence was altered to meet the 21st century needs and comfort level. A rather small budget lead to the concept of simply adding a spiral staircase and 'pushing' an area of the existing roof outwards to form out two new rooms. The 'pushing' is visualized in the facade by forming windows in the extension polygonally, looking as if they automatically came out of 'the extending'. The cladding of the extension is horizontal to furthermore suggest the horizontal movement - the existing building was insulated and received a plaster surface, differentiating it from the new part of the building. The whole house was constructed highly energy-efficient to save maintenance and energy costs.
