This 12,000,000 sf mixed-use development is located in Xi’an, China. The design genesis for this site explores patterns found throughout Chinese culture, art and history. Inspiration came from the patterns found in the craftsmanship found in ancient Chinese woodworking and frame making for the home.. Window frames and door frames define the way one experiences a building both inside and outside. These openings connect users to the most fundamental necessities for the occupant- light and air. Intricate lattice work, geometric patterns, framing and structure of the historic Chinese building create beautiful shadows, provide privacy, tell a story and allow the building to be intensely expressive on the most detailed level.
Throughout the design, there is conscious effort to utilize traditional patterns derived through the study of ancient Chinese art. These patterns define the user experience at different scales both horizontally and vertically throughout the site. Pedestrians will notice the dynamic pattern expression on the facades of the towers from the street before they even enter the project. As users walk around the site, they will follow paths laid out in a geometric pattern that is a direct extension of these historic shapes at a grand scale.
The intention was to create a rational, beautiful and iconic design solution. This goal was achieved through a modern expression of ancient Chinese traditional patterns and integrates our contemporary interpretation of history and culture found in Xi’an. The design does not mimic historical design. It uses historical cues to create a new, highly considered artwork the public will know as Xi’an Bali Village.
