For over 20 years, the historic 1926 Rusnak Brothers Furniture building sat vacant on 79th Street, Auburn Gresham’s once thriving business corridor now facing disinvestment.
GAGDC, MKB, and Englewood-based design collaborative Beehyyve (partnering to design the nine non-profit tenant spaces) embarked on a seven year journey to return not only crucial services to a ‘health desert’, but a sense of community pride to the neighborhood.
From the inside out, the ‘hub’ is transformed: a centralized circulation core and modern infrastructure; new windows on the once blank east/west elevations to allow natural light; brick infill is replaced by new storefront glass to activate the street; the terra cotta facade is restored.
Its impact goes far beyond the physical - Auburn Gresham residents have access to100 living-wage job opportunities, providing services to support youth, seniors and families. The result is a catalyst for future developments.
