2008
SIZE
100,000 sqft - 300,000 sqft
BUDGET
$500K - 1M
Infrastructural developments cutting straight throw the old Olympus '70 athletics track prompted the association to arrange for new premises. Our challenge was to come up with an appealing sports venue within a limited budget. It was like trying to run a marathon in world record time. Relishing this challenge, we gave it our all. The idea was to implement the luxury Thermoflor department store concept in combination with a number of structural additions. We also extended the programme to include the out-of-school care facilities of Stichting Kwest. The concept consisted of the erection of a steel frame structure combined with red transparent insulated plastic sheets as a protective hood over the existing running track. Power floated concrete floors were added, as well as walls, doors and steps finished with wood, and the sanitary facilities were decorated with waterproof polyester and finished with lively colours. The outer walls incorporate red cedar plinths and door/window frames combined with aluminium concertina doors. The hood-shaped end elevations were finished in clear glass wherever possible. In this way, a typical Westand product – a department store – was transformed into a lively temple to athletics. Truly record breaking!
