Denton Corker Marshall was invited by Lend Lease to design one of the residential plots at the 2012 Olympics Athletes Village in Stratford. Plot number 1 was the highest profile site in the village and contains over 300 two and three bed premium market standard apartments and affordable homes.
The site sits at the City end of the village and has prime views over Regent Canal to Canary Wharf and the City of London. In response to this unique position on the site the architecture was given distinction through the subtle complexity of massing and façade articulation. Each of the independent blocks of apartments are visually subdivided, with their varying heights expressed as a rectangular ‘organ pipe’ arrangement.
The pre-cast concrete façade elements incorporate a vocabulary of punched openings within a solid face. Ranges of different sized rectangular openings are carefully arranged into an apparently random composition. The facades also use a simple palette of materials throughout, including Portland stone-faced concrete and ribbed concrete panels that are punctuated by vertical stacks of elegantly detailed metal clad balconies.
